It's time to put your knitting hobby into full-fledged practice by crafting the classic old-school knitted item: mittens. We expressed our love for mittens when Bernie Sanders' cutest mittens became a viral meme that helped raise $1.6 million in charity.
The great thing about knitting mittens is that it doesn't need extra materials. Just a pair of size 10 knitting needles, a ball of yarn, and a stitch marker, and you're all set. This blog will serve as an easy guide outlining the basic steps for knitting mittens.
Start by wrapping the wool around your palm and make a pretzel-shaped "X". Slowly put it off your palm and latch it onto the needle. Casting on is how most knitting projects begin.
Making the cuff involves a few knits and purls. Purl is a specific knitting technique to form a stitch that grows away from the needle.
Look at your hand and notice how the thumb sticks out from the rest of the hand figure. Knitting the thumb gusset will accommodate this, which is a small extra triangle of fabric. Making this will mean you have to make a very small increase, i.e., make the thumb sticking out portion slightly wider as you knit. You will later decrease it to close off the thumb.
Knitting the main body of the mitten requires simple knitting, as you just have to keep knitting every round. Form stitches and keep working up the palm and fingers portion of the mitten
This goes until you have to incline your knitting to form the decrease so the knitting can slowly come to a close.
You start knitting the thumb at where you left off the thumb gusset. Imagine it's an ultra-small mitten body that you're knitting. Just like the mitten body, you will keep knitting until you start the decrease.
Repeat all the given steps for the second mitten. The good news is that you knit it the same way, as both mittens are identical.
